About the Alaska State Court Structure:

The Alaska district courts are the state's trial courts with jurisdiction to hear tort claims, and contract claims where the amount in dispute is between $0 and $50,000. Additionally, Alaska's district court jurisdiction includes small claims cases, where the amount in controversy is up to $7,500. The district courts have jurisdiction over misdemeanor, DWI or DUI, and domestic violence cases. They have exclusive traffic or other violation jurisdiction, except for uncontested parking violations, which are handled administratively. Jurisdiction also extends to emergency juvenile proceedings, and preliminary hearings. Alaska's superior court is a trial court of general jurisdiction. The jurisdiction extends over domestic relations, felony, juvenile, contract, tort, probate estate, mental health, civil and criminal trial court, and the district court of appeals. Alaska's court of appeals has authority to hear appeals in cases involving criminal prosecution, post-conviction relief, juvenile delinquency, extradition, habeas corpus, probation and parole, bail, and sentencing matters. The highest level of state court in Alaska is the supreme court. It hears appeals from lower state courts and also administers the state's judicial system. It has discretionary jurisdiction in criminal, juvenile, original proceeding, disciplinary cases, interlocutory decisions.

Research Notes

  • Search more than one court level.Trial courts, appellate courts, bankruptcy courts, and specialty courts may each hold different parts of a case trail.
  • Use the clerk for official copies.Certified documents and official record copies should come directly from the responsible court or clerk office.
  • Online access varies by county and court type. Some courts provide full searchable dockets, while others provide only calendars, indexes, or request instructions.
  • Cross-check related record categories.Criminal records, judgments and liens, bankruptcy filings, inmate searches, and public-record hubs often help complete a statewide research path.
