How to Search County Records

Select Your County

Choose a county from the grid below to access that county's official public records portal, court system, and government offices.

Identify the Record Type

Decide what you need: court records, property deeds, vital records, business filings, or tax assessment records, each is held by a different county office.

Search Online or In Person

Each parish clerk of court runs its own online records system for cases and conveyances, the Louisiana Supreme Court offers its own case search, and birth and death certificates are ordered from the Vital Records Registry in New Orleans, a service center or VitalChek.

Pay Any Required Fees

A Louisiana birth certificate costs $15, a death certificate $7 and an Orleans Parish marriage certificate $5, plus a 50 cent state charge on mail and VitalChek orders; parish clerks set their own copy fees.

Verify Identity if Required

Open records need no ID. Birth and death certificates, confidential for 100 and 50 years, require proper identification and go only to the registrant, close family and legal representatives.

What Records Are Available

Straight answers

Louisiana County Public Records, questions

Are county records public information?

Yes. Louisiana's Public Records Law, R.S. 44:1 and following, lets anyone examine public records without charge, and parish clerk of court, assessor and conveyance records are open. Louisiana is a closed record state for vital records: birth certificates are confidential for 100 years and death certificates for 50 years, and the Vital Records Registry releases them only to the person named, close family and legal representatives. Juvenile, adoption and sealed court files are closed.

How much do certified copies cost?

A certified Louisiana birth certificate costs $15 per copy, or $24 for a certificate plus short-form birth card, a death certificate $7 and an Orleans Parish marriage certificate $5, plus a 50 cent state charge on each mail-in or VitalChek order; VitalChek also adds a security fee. If no record is found the fee is kept for the search. Parish clerks of court set their own copy and certification fees, and public records copies are charged under the custodian's reasonable fee schedule.

Can I search county records online?

Louisiana has no statewide trial court portal; each parish clerk of court runs its own online records system, and the Louisiana Supreme Court offers a case search for its own cases. Conveyance and mortgage records are recorded by the parish clerk of court, with most parishes searchable online, and the Louisiana State Police Internet Background Check returns a name-based criminal history. Birth and death certificates are not searchable online; order from the Vital Records Registry in New Orleans by mail, at a Vital Records service center, or through VitalChek.

What identification do I need?

Open records need no ID. Every Louisiana birth or death certificate request must include proper identification, the fee and a completed application, and the applicant must be the registrant, a parent, child, grandparent, sibling, spouse or legal representative. Records older than 100 years for births and 50 years for deaths are open through the State Archives.

How long does it take to receive records?

Mailed birth certificate applications to the Vital Records Registry take approximately 8 to 10 weeks for delivery, so walk-in service at the Vital Records Central Office or a regional service center is faster. Parish clerk of court online searches are immediate, and the State Police Internet Background Check returns results online.
