Overview
Montana's daily press is led by the Billings Gazette, the state's largest newspaper, the Missoulian, the Great Falls Tribune, the Montana Standard in Butte, the Helena Independent Record, the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, the Daily Inter Lake in Kalispell, the Ravalli Republic in Hamilton and the Havre Daily News. The Montana Free Press covers state government online, and about sixty weeklies serve the state's 56 counties, many of them the only news source for a county the size of a New England state.
Montana newspapers carry the legal notices state law requires for trustee's sales, estates and government actions, publish obituaries for every county, and hold court coverage that pairs with the district courts, since Montana has no statewide online case search.

Historic Montana newspapers online
The Montana Historical Society in Helena holds nearly every Montana newspaper ever published on microfilm and runs the Montana Newspapers digital collection, which offers free digitized titles from 1864 onward and contributes to Chronicling America. The Montana Memory Project adds more digitized newspapers from local libraries, and the Billings Public Library provides free access to the Gazette archive with a library card. The University of Montana's Mansfield Library holds western Montana titles.

Legal notices, public notices and obituaries in Montana
Montana law requires trustee's sale notices for foreclosures, notices to creditors in probate, name changes, tax lien sales and county and city proceedings to be published in a newspaper of general circulation in the county, and the Montana Newspaper Association collects them in a statewide search. Obituaries appear in most of Montana's dailies and weeklies, and the Montana Historical Society keeps an obituary index. Court coverage is especially useful in Montana because district court records live with each county clerk of court.
