Overview

Alaska's press is small and spread over a territory larger than Texas, California and Montana together. The Anchorage Daily News is the state's main newspaper, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner covers the Interior, the Juneau Empire covers the capital and Southeast Alaska, and the Peninsula Clarion, the Ketchikan Daily News, the Kodiak Daily Mirror, the Homer News and the Nome Nugget serve their towns. Public radio stations fill the gaps in communities with no paper at all.

Alaska newspapers matter for records because the state's boroughs and cities publish their legal notices in them, the courts publish notices to creditors and name changes, and the papers' archives carry the arrest and court coverage that Alaska's small population makes easy to find by name.

Major Alaska newspapers and what they cover

The Anchorage Daily News covers state government, the legislature in Juneau, the oil industry and the courts, and it maintains the deepest archive of any Alaska title. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, founded in 1903, is one of the oldest dailies in the state and covers the North Slope and the Interior. The Juneau Empire covers the legislature during the session and the fishing industry. Weekly papers such as the Nome Nugget, the Arctic Sounder, the Bristol Bay Times, the Cordova Times and the Delta Wind carry borough assemblies, school boards and police logs for regions no daily reaches.

The Alaska State Library Historical Collections in Juneau holds newspaper microfilm for the whole state, and the University of Alaska Anchorage and Fairbanks libraries hold their regional titles. The Anchorage Public Library offers free database access to the Anchorage Daily News archive with a library card.
