Montana holds state prisoners at the Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge, the Montana Women's Prison in Billings, the Crossroads Correctional Center in Shelby, a private prison under state contract, and in regional prisons run by Dawson County in Glendive and Cascade County in Great Falls, plus pre-release centers in Billings, Missoula, Butte, Great Falls, Helena and Bozeman. County jails run by the 56 sheriffs hold pretrial detainees and misdemeanor sentences.

The Montana Correctional Offender Network runs on the name or the DOC ID and returns the DOC ID, name, date of birth, the current location, which can be a prison, a regional facility, a pre-release center, a treatment program or a probation and parole office, the status, the supervising officer's office and each offense with the county and sentence. Photographs are shown for people in custody. Because supervision cases are included, the search confirms releases and shows who supervises a parolee.

The Yellowstone County Detention Facility in Billings, the Missoula County Detention Facility, the Gallatin County Detention Center in Bozeman, the Cascade County Regional Detention Center in Great Falls, the Flathead County Detention Center in Kalispell and the Lewis and Clark County Detention Center in Helena post rosters with the booking date, charges and bond. Montana's constitution gives every person a right to know what state agencies do, and the Public Records Act, Title 2 chapter 6 of the Montana Code, applies it to custody records: name, DOC ID, location, offenses and sentence are public, and CON posts photographs. Sheriffs release booking photos. The Montana Board of Pardons and Parole hears eligible prisoners after a quarter of the sentence for most offenses and posts its hearing schedule and decisions. Probation and parole officers of the Department of Corrections supervise releases and felony probationers from offices across the state, and the CON record shows the office. Montana sentences often include a suspended portion served on supervision after prison. The judgment sits with the clerk of the district court of the convicting county.

If the Correctional Offender Network returns nothing, check the county detention center roster for the county of arrest, starting with Yellowstone, Missoula, Gallatin, Cascade or Flathead, since pending cases and misdemeanor sentences stay in the jail.
