Indiana Inmate Search at a Glance
Indiana prison inmates are held by the Indiana Department of Correction in facilities such as the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, Pendleton, Wabash Valley in Carlisle, Putnamville, Miami in Bunker Hill, New Castle, Plainfield, the Rockville Correctional Facility and the Indiana Women's Prison in Indianapolis. County jails run by the 92 sheriffs hold pretrial detainees, people serving misdemeanor sentences and, since a 2014 sentencing reform, most people convicted of the lowest level felonies.
The IDOC Offender Search is the state lookup. It runs on the DOC number or the name and shows people in prison and people on parole.

County jails and local custody in Indiana
The Marion County Sheriff's inmate search covers the Adult Detention Center in Indianapolis and lists the booking date, charges and bond. The Allen County Jail in Fort Wayne, the Lake County Jail in Crown Point, the St. Joseph County Jail in South Bend, the Vanderburgh County Jail in Evansville, the Hamilton County Jail in Noblesville and the Tippecanoe County Jail in Lafayette publish their own rosters. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police book into the Marion County jail, and the Indiana State Police book into the county jail of the arrest.

What Indiana inmate records show, and what stays private
The Indiana Access to Public Records Act, Indiana Code 5-14-3, makes the custody record public, and the IDOC posts photographs, offenses and release dates. Sheriffs release booking photos, and Indiana law prohibits websites from charging to remove them. Medical and mental health files, the pre-sentence report, classification and disciplinary records are exempt. The Indiana State Police sells a limited criminal history, which covers felony and Class A misdemeanor arrests, to anyone for a fee, and the state courts post most criminal cases on the MyCase portal.
Indiana expunges and seals many records after set waiting periods, and an expunged conviction no longer appears in the court portal or in a limited criminal history.

Parole, probation and release in Indiana
The Indiana Parole Board hears parole for the small number of indeterminate sentences and decides revocations, while most people leave prison on a fixed period of parole set by statute and supervised by IDOC parole agents in ten districts. Probation belongs to the county courts and each county probation department, so probationers do not appear in the IDOC search. Under Indiana's credit time rules, the earliest possible release date on the record already reflects good time credit. The judgment sits with the clerk of the circuit or superior court of the convicting county.

When the search shows nothing
If the Indiana offender search returns nothing, check the Marion County Sheriff's inmate search for an Indianapolis arrest or the county jail roster for Allen, Lake, St. Joseph or Vanderburgh county, since Level 6 felonies and misdemeanors are served in county jail. Check MyCase for the case, the federal Bureau of Prisons locator for a federal case, including the federal prison in Terre Haute, and VINELink for a recent release.

Federal & National Authoritative Sources
These federal and national sources complement Indiana's state-level records. They are the authoritative sources you should cross-check when Indiana state records are incomplete or out-of-state activity matters.
Federal BOP, Inmate Locator The Federal Bureau of Prisons locator returns federal inmates held since 1982 in any BOP facility, contract facility, or community corrections center.
VINELink, Victim Notification Operated by Appriss for the U.S. Department of Justice's victim-notification program. Free, anonymous registration for custody-change alerts across participating states.
U.S. Marshals, Prisoner Tracking The USMS Prisoner Tracking System is the authoritative source for federal detainees in pre-trial custody (before BOP designation).
Straight answers
Indiana Inmate Search, questions
What is an Indiana DOC number?
It is the identifier the Indiana Department of Correction assigns when a person enters state custody. It follows the person through transfers and parole and is the most reliable way to search the offender lookup.
Why is a Level 6 felony conviction not in the Indiana DOC search?
Since 2014 most people convicted of Level 6 felonies serve their sentence in the county jail or on community supervision rather than in a state prison. Check the county sheriff's roster and the MyCase court record.
Where is someone arrested in Indianapolis held?
At the Marion County Adult Detention Center. The Marion County Sheriff's online inmate search lists the booking date, charges and bond.
Does the Indiana offender search show parolees?
Yes. People on parole appear with their parole district instead of a facility, which confirms the release and tells you who supervises them.
